Student Ambassador Leadership Program (SALP)

Program Description

The Student Ambassador Leadership Program (SALP) is an extra-curricular program which provides opportunities for young people to create networks and develop their qualities and skills via active engagement within the University and volunteering within the wider community.

SALP aims to:

  • Challenge students to realise their goals and explore new ideas
  • Create supportive networks that aid students in their endeavours
  • Promote and support volunteerism amongst students
  • Empower students with a variety of valuable skills
  • Establish projects that address needs in the University and community
  • Foster positive relationships between University staff and students

Commitment & Duration

The Student Ambassador Leadership Program is a 14-month program and consists of two components:

1. Training: Seminars, workshops and weekend camps

2. Contributing: University Service and Community Engagement

Who we look for?

There are no set criteria for selecting Ambassadors – they don’t need to be an H1 student, or heavily involved at Uni already.  HOWEVER, students who have consistently made unsatisfactory progress should not be considered as the substantial time commitment of SALP would not assist a student who was already having difficulty making satisfactory progress. The following are guidelines to consider when selecting:

  • Students who may have demonstrated prior willingness to contribute to the faculty in non-academic activities and/or community
  • Students who wish to get involved in University life
  • Students who reflect the diversity of the faculty/dept
  • Emphasis on access and equity
  • Students who have demonstrated awareness of study/other commitments
  • Opportunity to encourage students who have little leadership/volunteering experience

Testimonials

“SALP changed my life! It gave me the confidence to go out and make a difference, knowing that there was a team of people to support me and give advice along the way. The program does not open doors for you; it gives you the confidence to find the doors and open them yourself.” Kristen Berean, Student Ambassador 1999

“The SALPers that I have worked with have shown enthusiasm, forward thinking, friendliness and a professional attitude to the tasks required of them. They are an asset to the University.” Bianca Charleston, International Student Services

“To date, I have found all SALP volunteers to be excellent and reliable contributors to St. Vincent’s Hospital. They have contributed to holistic patient care and demonstrated a great appreciation of social responsibility.” Anne Franzi-Ford, St. Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne
