Program Description
Embrace Education is a non-profit, University student run organisation that provides free services to disadvantaged high school students in Melbourne. Embrace Education aims to support the education of disadvantaged high-school students, especially students from a recent migrant or refugee background.
There are 3 core programs, the Embrace “Homework Clubs”, “In-School Tutoring” and “Individual Tutoring.”
Commitment & Duration
As all volunteers are University students themselves, Embrace Education offer three different programs designed to fit around University studies! The commitment required of each program varies, however no more than a few hours per week or if necessary per fortnight, is expected of volunteers under any program.
In the Individual Tutoring program volunteers are matched with a suitable high-school student to provide tutoring and mentoring to them. The In-School Tutoring program involves tutors directly entering the classroom, so it is important to give a few days notice to the school you are placed at if you cannot attend a session. The Homework Club program is the most flexible. This involves a car-pool of Uni student tutors arriving at a school and tutoring students who choose to remain behind after class. Hence there should be others to cover for you if you can’t attend a particular night, although you’ll still need to give a few days notice to the co-ordinator of the night.
Volunteers are not signed on for any length of time, however a weeks’ notice is required if you have to discontinue at any time, to have time to find a replacement for you if needed.
Who we look for?
Embrace is always in need of more passionate university students to act as tutors and mentors to disadvantaged students. The students require assistance in a wide range of disciplines in addition to help with English, so university students from any course are welcome to apply. No previous tutoring experience is necessary.
