Earthwatch

Program Description

Earthwatch Institute (Australia) is an international environmental not-for-profit research organisation whose mission is to engage people worldwide in scientific field research and education to promote the understanding and action necessary for a sustainable environment.

Earthwatch currently supports around 75 environmental research projects in over 30 countries by providing funds and paying volunteers who work alongside leading field scientists and researchers.

At the core of Earthwatch’s work is our scientific research program. We have prioritised our research into four key areas; climate change, sustainable resource management, oceans and sustainable cultures.

These areas address what we believe are the biggest challenges facing our environment but also present the greatest opportunity for unearthing sustainable solutions.

Commitment & Duration

Earthwatch has developed an array of research expeditions, allowing you to take part in real field research in a time frame that suits you.

  • One-day expeditions – Scientist for a Day expeditions are based around Australia’s capital cities, making them easily accessible for those who are time poor but still want to contribute to the understanding of our natural environment.
  • Weekend expeditions – these special weekend teams are a great opportunity to join Earthwatch scientists for a snapshot of life in the field and focus on the same research activities as two-week expeditions.
  • Week-long expeditions – if you have a bit of extra time, our weeklong expeditions are specifically designed for someone who wants a “taste” of how the classic Earthwatch expeditions work.
  • Two-week expeditions – this is the classic Earthwatch expedition which can take you all over the world and gives you the chance to fully immerse yourself in the research of your chosen expedition.

Who we look for?

The standard minimum age for participation on an Earthwatch expedition is 18 years. All we ask is for you to have the passion and enthusiasm to make a difference.

Application Details

Costs to join an Earthwatch research expedition range from $99 – $7,000 and covers the cost of all accommodation, food, equipment, safety and training on the expedition and of offsetting greenhouse gas emissions from travel.

Your support in terms of time and money is critical; without it, the research simply would not happen. Your contribution allows us to continue our vital work to help save ecosystems around the world.

To join a research expedition, either sign up online or call the office and book your place on a team.
