Friends of Toolern Creek

Program Description

The Friends of Toolern Creek have transformed a once neglected stretch of creek frontage in the shadow of the Western Highway overpass in Melton into a people friendly park for families to visit. In 2005 this place was a focus of anti-social activity and vandalism, and rubbish was dumped regularly. The site has been transformed dramatically over a relatively short time into a park that is both a haven for native wildlife and a pleasant park where families can visit for passive recreation, enjoying the natural beauty of our local environment. The ancient red gum trees leaning over pools of water in the creek create an atmosphere of tranquility. The Friends group has been in operation for only a few years but they have conducted extensive plantings of locally indigenous plants, and they conduct planting and maintenance activities on a weekly basis throughout the year.

We regularly work with corporate volunteers, Primary Schools, Secondary Schools, Centre Link Clients and many others.

We also work closely with Melton Shire, Melbourne Water, (including Water Watch), Parks Victoria, Western Water, Southern Rural Water, CFA and other authorities.

In October we hold a community Environmental Festival called the “Platypus Festival”. The festival brings environmental issues and the activities of local environmental groups to the local community. It showcases the work being done to enhance our environment by local volunteers
